Constellation invests in pre-Prohibition distillery
Constellation Ventures has acquired a minority stake in pre-Prohibition era craft whiskey maker Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery in Nashville.

As part of the deal with the venture capital arm of Constellation Brands, the distillery will continue to run and market its products independently.
Founded in 1860 by German immigrant Charles Nelson, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery was one of the largest whiskey producers in America before Prohibition.
Having closed in 1909, Charles’ great-great-great grandsons, Andy and Charlie Nelson, reopened it in 2014 using the original family recipe for their Tennessee whiskey.
“We are honoured to continue our great-great-great grandfather’s legacy. With the support of Constellation Ventures, we’re eager to progress to the next level in re-establishing our family business,” said CEO Charlie Nelson.
“Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery brings together two of today’s hottest trends in spirits – whiskey and craft,” said Bill Newlands, executive vice president of Constellation Brands.
“The entrepreneurial spirit that made the distillery great nearly 150 years ago is winning accolades and enthusiasts again today.
“Constellation Brands’ support of this spirit will help Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery accelerate growth as it continues to re-introduce these unique whiskies,” he added.
This is the second investment made by Constellation Ventures, which seeks to back craft producers or drinks companies with innovative concepts.
Last year the firm invested a minority stake in Chicago mixologist Charles Joy’s super-premium ready-to-drink cocktail brand Crafthouse Cocktails.
