Restaurant Gordon Ramsay shakes up wine list

The wine bible at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea has been dramatically revamped to make it more interactive and bring the wines inside to life.

The new 45-page wine list at the three Michelin star site on Royal Hospital Road took head sommelier Jan Konetzki six months to develop.

Among the new features are maps of regions like the Loire Valley, an aroma wheel highlighting the notes found in certain wines and a bottle size guide.

The tricky topic of terroir is tackled succinctly in a quote from California winemaker Cathy Corison, who describes it simply as “good dirt”.

Konetzki hopes the new list will make the act of choosing a bottle of wine at the restaurant less intimidating and more of a fun experience.

He also hopes it will make guests feel freer to browse the list and choose something themselves rather than relying too heavily on the sommelier’s recommendations.

“I wanted to create focus points to add excitement and lighten up the long list. No matter how much or little one knows about wine, there are plenty of interesting facts one can pick up on the way of choosing a wine,” he told db.

Wines on the list range from £28 to £10,000 for a bottle of 1900 Château Margaux.
