NZ retains highest bottle price in UK

New Zealand is still the leading country by average bottle price in the UK and continues to perform well in the ‘super-premium’ price segment.

The average price per bottle of New Zealand wine is now £7.37 according to Nielsen, above the overall UK average which is £5.46.

New Zealand is the leading country in the UK in more ‘premium’ categories in particular the £7-8 slot where it has grown 23% and holds a value share of 21.8%.

In all price categories over £7 New Zealand is now second to France in both volume and value.

Overall, while the UK market declined 2% last year, New Zealand saw 10% increases in both volume and value.

Chris Stroud, marketing manager Europe for New Zealand Winegrowers, said: “It’s great to see New Zealand wine continue to perform so strongly and grow at such a healthy rate, bringing value and volume to a market which is otherwise in decline.

“New Zealand wine has a premium price, yet continues to grow at a faster rate than other wine producing nations, demonstrating the reputation that New Zealand has for delivering quality wines.”

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc remains the driving force in the UK market and the most popular grape variety with an 11% share of the market.

“Sauvignon Blanc is a clear favourite of UK consumers, and that shows no sign of diminishing, New Zealand leads the category with 39% share, and growth of 12%.

“Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s main wine export, and our winemakers recognise the importance of exploring diversification within the variety. The diversity of Sauvignon Blanc will be celebrated at our annual trade tasting in January, and our inaugural International Sauvignon Blanc Celebration held in Marlborough, New Zealand in February 2016.”
