Burger King to sell booze

A UK outlet of Burger King has been granted a licence to sell alcohol, and more could follow suit if it proves successful.

One of the fast food chain’s restaurants in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk applied for and was granted the right to sell liquor from 10am to 11pm seven days a week – although local police have objected.

As reported by The Telegraph, the venue has plans to sell beer in plastic bottles which are to be drunk on the premises. The restaurant will only be able to serve one beer per adult until 9pm and no alcohol will be allowed outside.

Nonetheless, local licensing inspector, Matt Dee, told The Telegraph, that Burger King was not well-equipped enough to handle the new licence, pointing out its lack of CCTV, door staff and staff training, particularly with regards not selling alcohol to minors.

Burger King’s parent company, CPL Foods, is also said to be seeking licences for branches in Blackpool, Hull and Newcastle-under-Lyme and, if successful, could continue to get permission for its 654 outlets in the UK.

Burger King already sells alcohol in parts of the US, Singapore, Venezuela and Spain, usually through its ‘Whopper Bars’.

A spokeswoman for the company is quoted as saying: “We’re just catching up with the rest of the world really.” In September of this year the chain released its own ‘Whopper Wine’ to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its first outlet opening in Spain.

Although it sells alcohol in certain branches across mainland Europe, fast-food competitor McDonald’s does not appear to have any plans to introduce the practice in the UK for now.
