Slovenia expects ‘exceptional’ 2015 vintage

Winemakers in the Styria region of Slovenia are expecting this year’s vintage to rival the “exceptional” 2011, according to Slovenian wine producer P&F Wineries.

Styrian winemakers expect much better results, both in terms of volume and quality, compared to last year’s rain affected harvest, the producer of Puklavec and Friends, Nebo and Gomila wine brands said.

“This year was almost perfect for viticulture. In terms of quantity, we expect a good year… However in terms of quality, we expect one of the best vintages, maybe even better than the exceptional year back in 2011,” the producer said in a vintage update for the drinks business.

“The 2015 vintage will certainly find its place in the archive cellars,” it said.

Mitja Herga, chief oenologist of the Jeruzalem Ormož cellar – another P&F brand – said that this year’s highlights will come from the aromatics, especially Muscat, Traminer and Sauvignon.

The producer said it expects mature, elegant wines from late varieties such as Riesling and Furmint, because of good summer sunshine, sufficient rainfall and slightly higher temperatures.

The latest estimates indicate that Slovenia will produce approximately 850,000 hectolitres of wine this year.
