Over 1,000 exhibitors are set to descend from 5-7 November for the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair organised by the Trade and Development Council.

Now in its eighth year, the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair attracts exhibitors from all over the world keen to crack the Asia market.

Last year’s event saw 20,000 trade buyers from 75 countries and regions with the last day playing host to over 30,000 public visitors – an increase of 30% compared to the year before.

According to the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council (HKTDC), the global wine industry has “shifted its focus to Asia.”

Figures from Euromonitor International report that wine sales in Asia grew to US$77.5bn in 2014 up 54% compared to the previous year whereas for 2013-2018, wine sales are forecast to grow 4.4% per annum in value. China has seen the most dramatic results, sales amounting to US$48.1 billion in 2014, up 116% compared to five years ago.

Portugal has been chosen at this year’s wine fair partner country with a Portuguese national pavilion at the fair and a line-up of Portugal-themed wine events and activities organized in conjunction with the Wines of Portugal.

A plethora of grand tastings, master classes, wine tastings, cocktail demonstration and seminars will take place during the three-day fair and Debra Meiburg MW once again serves as the conference’s advisor and moderator and will share the latest industry updates with the audience.

Meiburg is also the director of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition which is in its seventh year.

Last year’s popular Whisky and Spirits Zone will return, giving visitors to understand the key role that whisky now plays in the Asia drinks trade.

Anita Ma, director of Sopexa in Hong Kong and Macau commented: “The Hong Kong fair provides an important showcase for us to promote French wines to the Asian market especially the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong because it draws large numbers of Asian buyers. It is a good place for us to do business, to meet with existing business partners and to look for new customers.”

The Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair runs as a trade-only event from Thursday 5 November – Friday 6 November with the public admitted on Saturday 7 November.
