Second Somm film to premiere this November
The sequel to Jason Wise’s 2013 cult documentary Somm is to open the Napa Valley Film Festival this November.
Somm: Into the Bottle will take centre stage on the opening night at this year’s film festival, which takes place on 11-15 November in Yountville.
While Somm focused on the stresses and pressures of the notoriously tough Master Sommelier exam, the sequel intents to lift the lid on wine production.
Somm: Into the Bottle explores wine history, the journey from grape to glass and how the price of a wine is decided, promising a “never before seen look” into the world of wine.
“Somm was a great introduction into the world of sommeliers but I wanted to delve deeper into the profession and the wine industry as a whole,” Wise said.
The film will also explore how wine ages, with “some of the world’s rarest bottles of wine” opened during the documentary.
“We were honored to host the world premiere of Somm in 2102, so it makes it doubly sweet to be hosting the world premiere of the sequel,” the Napa Valley Film Festival’s executive and artistic director Marc Lhormer told the Hollywood Reporter.
“If you know and love wine, you know that when you plant a new vineyard, it takes five years until the grapes are good enough to go into the bottle, so we’re thrilled to open our fifth annual festival with such a prestigious film,” he added.
