Butcher puts the ‘bang’ into bangers
A UK butcher may soon be selling sausages flavoured with vodka and Red Bull or Jack Daniel’s after it invited customers to suggest new additions to the range.
John Pettit & Son butchers in Grimsby launched the competition via Facebook, offering customers the chance to win 5lb of free sausages. It has since released a shortlist of 10 flavour combinations, with a public vote set to decide the final five new sausages that will go into production.
Among the shortlisted options are pork with Jack Daniel’s Honey and pork with the popular spirit and mixer combination vodka and Red Bull. The ideas might sound outlandish, but Jack Daniel’s already produces its own barbecue sauce range, while the BBC Good Food website features a “Vodka Sausage” recipe as “a Russian twist on the classic sausage casserole”
The initiative was created by 18-year-old employee Tom Whotton, who told the Grimsby Telegraph: “We can do any sort of sausage really, so even though we’ve received some strange suggestions there shouldn’t be any problem making them.”
With the scheme attracting over 1,500 recipe ideas, Whotton commented: “It’s been so popular and I’m amazed how many messages we have had on Facebook – it’s been crazy.”
Voting closes on Wednesday 19 August, with the winning sausages due to appear in time for the UK’s August Bank Holiday weekend.
