World’s first blue wine goes on sale
Keen to push beyond the realms of red, white and rosé, a group of young Spaniards have broken the mould with the launch of the world’s first blue wine.
As reported by Olive Press, six entrepreneurs in their ‘20s have invented Gik, a bright blue wine from Bierzo in northwest Spain made with red and white grapes.
The wine took two years to develop in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country and Azti Tecnalia, the food research department of the Basque Government.
A base wine is created from red and white grapes, then anthocyanin and indigo pigments are added to turn it blue and the wine is softened with sweeteners.
Its makers recommend serving the 11.5% abv Gik cold due to its sweetness. The unconventional drop is aimed at younger consumers seeking something different from their wine experience.
“We wanted to create an innovative and daring product in tune with the changing world – the wine industry needs a little revolution,” a spokesman told Olive Press.
The website describes the colour blue as representing “movement, innovation, fluidity, change and infinity”.
It continues with the following quote by Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky: “The deeper the blue becomes, the more strongly it calls man towards the infinite, awakening in him a desire for the pure.”
The first batch has gone on sale for €10 a bottle via the Gik website and the plan is to make the wine at different wineries across Spain depending on demand. None of the six founders have any previous winemaking experience.
Yet another reason to have full nutritional and ingredient labeling requirements for alcohol products.
They make me lose one of my favorite joke about wrong and simplist ideas about rosé wines and women: “if rosé wine is for girls, why is there not a blue wine for boys?”
Anyway, given how this blue wine is made, it must taste like smurf pee….which I never tasted, but I imagine!

The wine is actually blue, not the bottle.
To whomever left the site about the wine, that is not the same wine they are talking about. This wine is called GIK. If it just came out, it’s probably not here yet.
I’m sure it’s pretty, but it’s not remotely the first blue wine.
Blue wine sounds great, the spaniards should give it a go I grew up with Blue Nun as a child watched other poeple drink it I was under age well maybe a sip was a tasty wine also enjoyed Black Tower back in those days cheers..
If it takes food coloring to satisfy the desires of a younger generation, I say, “Focus on the quality of the wine, not its color. Eventually, those resisting red, white and rose will discover that true wine lovers are color blind.”

According to a friend who’s just tried it, it’s truly awful (he couldn’t finish the tasting sample…).

Ingredients are on its label, but not mentioned on website, so it would be revealed after you got the bottle(s).
It contains: E950 (Acesulfame K), E955 (sucralose), E952 (cyclamic acid) artificial sweeteners (labelled as “non caloric sweetener”) – two of it is suspected carcinogen, causing DNA-damage, altering neurological function etc…
