The week in pictures: Hong Kong

Champagne and caviar tasting, a rosé revolution, street art and a failed detox – it’s been an interesting week for the db HK team.

The Flying Winemaker‘s third and final stop of the annual Rosé Revolution in Macau saw a wild array of pink-tinged tipples consumed by consumers and trade alike. From Australian Pinot Noir paired with pink cupcakes to Provence legends such as Miraval and Whispering Angel, it was a sell-out event as people fled Macau’s humidity.

Newly opened Safe Bubbles & Malt in Central held a Champagne Drappier and caviar pairing. Safe prides itself on being the only bar in Asia that has a collection of over 700 of the world’s top malt whiskies and 300 choices of premium sparkling wines. It’s also just started hosting whisky masterclasses for Hong Kong’s whisky enthusiasts and the uninitiated.

db HK was invited to try mixologist Giancarlo’s cocktails at upscale bar, On Dining Kitchen and Lounge. A particular favourite was the 1990 Bellini made with Col Vetoraz Prosecco and white peach purée.

As a feeble attempt to detox, team db HK headed to Jason Atherton’s social venture, Aberdeen Street Social to try its cleansing juice of apple, celery and spinach. All was well until the imminent end of Happy Hour was announced and the intended AFD (alcohol free day) just went downhill from there.

Back to the Flying Winemaker, Eddie McDougall & co hosted a Weingut Weszeli tasting to introduce the venerable (the estate dates back to 1629) Austrian producer’s Riesling and Grüner Vetliner to Hong Kong’s lucky wine trade.

Team db HK visited Crown Wine Cellars in Shouson Hill to catch up with Greg De’eb, Crown Wine Cellar’s co-founder. Here he is with Ivy Ng, db HK’s publisher.

Hong Kong’s PoHo district in Sheung Wan, (so called because a lot of streets and buildings begin with ‘Po’ which means treasure) has become the neighbourhood where a plethora of trendy cafes, art galleries and street art have sprung up, seemingly overnight. On the way home, the db HK team snapped this ethereally beautiful piece of urban art.
