Gold gives ‘smoothness’ to sparkling drink

A sparkling drink from Latvia claims to be breaking new ground with its production process – the fizz is filtered through gold.

Cosmopolitan Diva is a sparkling fruit-based drink

The product, which is called Cosmopolitan Diva, comes from the Baltic’s Latvijas Balzams – a producer which is managed by umbrella organisation Amber Beverage Group – and sees the drink passed through gold to “add smoothness”, according to Valters Kaže, who is chief marketing officer at the Amber Beverage Group.

Kaže, who attended Vinexpo in Bordeaux last month to promote the sparkling drink, told db that the gold filtration technology was borrowed from the company’s main business – vodka production, where the spirit “is passed through a filter with golden filaments to enriched the beverage with gold ions for a balanced and smooth taste.”

Aware of the beneficial impact of gold on vodka, Kaže explained that the Latvian producer decided to experiment with this filtration process on fizz, and found that it “adds a light touch of smoothness and radiance to the beverage”.

Cosmopolitan Diva was first unveiled last year and comprises a apple base, and comes in a range of fruit flavours. The drink has a 6% abv, although there are also non-alcoholic variants.

Kaže stressed that it is the first sparkling drink to be filtered through gold.
