In celebration of World Whisky Day, Fine Vintage hosted a whisky and Cantonese food pairing with Gordon & MacPhail’s Richard Urquhart. “We have a huge focus on Asia,” said Urquhart. “China is our biggest market in volume and Japan in value. Interestingly, the profile of whisky drinkers is becoming younger with a more even split between men and women and whisky is a great match for Chinese food and its diverse flavours. Slàinte!”
Continuing with unique food and alcohol pairings, team db HK went to renowned Soho Sìchuān restaurant, Chilli Fagara where manager Tracy Wong in conjunction with Global Wine Cellar paired fiercely hot cuisine with different sake. Combining signature dishes such as king prawns roasted in chilli with Mizubasho sparkling sake went surprisingly well with the sake sweetness taking the heat off the spice.
As Comte Liger-Belair prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary, team db HK was lucky enough to taste some of its renowned Dragon Collection at the Grand Hyatt.
Hosted by New Zealand Wine and MWM, the New Zealand Wine Seminar Tasting got off to a raucous start with a traditional Haka ‘welcome’ to get everyone in the mood for all things Kiwi.
Prior to Veuve Clicquot’s launch of the new La Grande Dame 2006 vintage later on this year, team db HK had a magnificent lunch at The Tate in Soho with imaginative pairings such as Alphonso mango soup, popping candy and frozen yoghurt with the 2004 vintage rosé.
The start of June kicks off Riesling Weeks in Hong Kong where the newly elected Riesling Queen, Janina Huhn introduced the top Riesling producing regions in Germany, and consumers and the drinks trade alike sniffed and swirled their round hundreds of styles.
To end a busy week, team db HK attended the BIVB’s “One Day for Bourgogne Wines” at The Park Lane Hong Kong for the first 2012/2013 tasting to come onto the market. Speaking to db, Francois Labet, BIVB’s chairman of BIVB’s marketing and communication commission hailed the 2012 as a success. “Today, the wines of the 2012 vintage are revealing more of their personalities. These wines all have two characteristics in common: small quantities, but good quality. Their wide range reflects the aromatic diversity that characterises the wines of Bourgogne.”
