Rhône index jumps 2% in May
The Rhône 100, a sub-index of Liv-ex’s Fine Wine 1000, rose a little over 2% in May the best result out of all the sub-indices.
The whole index went up 0.2% last month the third month of consecutive gains, the Rhône leading the way this time with the next best-performing sub-index being the Burgundy 150 which rose 0.72%.
The Bordeaux 500 went up 0.11%, buoyed by an increase in activity surrounding the 2005 and 2012 vintages which represented 16.2% and 13% of Bordeaux’s overall trade in May. The former is attracting attention in advance of Robert Parker’s coming re-score, the latter on the back of Parker’s in-bottle review.
The Champagne 50 continued its post-Christmas slide, down 0.8% and the previously high-flying Rest of the World 50 also declined further recording a 1.01% dip, the most of all the sub-indices.
The Rhône 100 represents just 4% of the total value of the Fine Wine 1000 and is made up of the 10 most recent physical vintages of five southern Rhône and five northern Rhône wineries.
Those from the south are the Chateauneuf-du-Pape from: Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, Janasse, Pegau and Vieux Telegraphe, while those from the northern Rhône are the Ermitage and Hermitage wines from Chapoutier, Jean-Louis Chave and Jaboulet (Chapelle), the aggregated scores of the “La Las” from Guigal and Rene Rostaing’s Cote Rotie Landonne.
