Nyetimber launches limited edition Waterloo bottle
English sparkling winery Nyetimber is commemorating the 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo with a limited edition bottling.
Only 200 bottles of the “Waterloo 200 Classic Cuvee” will be available, exclusively from Harvey Nichols, for £34 a bottle from next Monday 15 June – more than enough time to stock up in time for the anniversary on 18 June.
The wine is from the recently released 2010 vintage and is a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, aged on its lees for three years in the cellar.
Each bottle is individually numbered and decorated with the Union flag and tricolour – with the Union flag slightly overshadowing the latter in a nod to the day’s victors – and “perhaps” to Britain’s on-going sparkling wine achievements.
Eric Heerema, Nyetimber’s owner and chief executive, commented: “Even though 200 years have passed since The Battle of Waterloo, most would agree that a friendly rivalry still exists between our two great countries.
“We may not be as prolific as some of the Champagne houses across the Channel, but we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in our comparatively short history, and are excited to see what the next 200 years will bring for English sparkling wine producers.”
As well as the 200 bottles available for the public to buy, Nyetimber will be served at a series of official Waterloo 200 events taking place throughout the month including the Duchess of Richmond’s Ball at the Palais d’Egmont and the Waterloo 200 Ball at Concert Noble, both in Brussels and the “Ride of Lions” reception in St James’s Square.
The wine will also be available online through Harvey Nichols from 15 June.
