Asda warns suppliers of Champagne scam

Asda is warning suppliers to be on guard after several companies received emails which claimed to be from the supermarket requesting bogus contracts.

One email, received by Champagne Pannier, claimed to be from Rebecca Williams, group commercial director for grocery and BWS Europe at Asda. The email asked the company to supply it with 3,000 bottles in return for a “long-term credit line”, requesting an immediate quotation.

The message claimed to be from Asda’s export department and citied the email address export@asda-stores-limited.com, which is not an address used by the supermarket. 

When contacted by the drinks business Asda confirmed it was aware of the scam and was assisting the police with its investigation, confirming it had no association with the emails received.

“We have sent out a letter to suppliers asking them to contact us directly if they receive this email”, a spokesperson for Asda said. “We are making sure that our suppliers are not caught up in it.”

Anyone that has received an email, or who is concerned about the authenticity of emails received, is advised to contact Asda directly.
