The week in pictures

db finally made it to Sager + Wilde’s sister site, Mission, under the arches in Bethnal Green this week. Accompanied by Miles McInnes, Jascots’ sales and marketing director, we enjoyed glorious glasses of The Other Guys Chardonnay 2012 from Monterey and Copain Tous Ensemble Syrah 2011 from Mendocino, alongside plentiful plates of burrata and blood orange, broad bean and lardo toast, crab arancini, Jersey Royals and chicken & tarragon terrine, ending on a (sugar) high with marshmallow ice cream.

David Beckham got into the Easter spirit last weekend by taking his eldest son Brooklyn on an Easter egg at a vineyard, posting this snap on his Facebook page.

Gerard Bertrand was in London this week to introduce Clos d’Ora, the £150-a-bottle result of this Languedoc producer’s “spiritual journey” that sees him combine biodynamic philosophy with quantum theory.

Mr Osborne with the owners of Sheppy’s, David and Louisa Sheppy, at the official opening of its Cider House tea room.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, paid a visit to Sheppy’s cider farm in Taunton, Devon, following his decision to cut duty on lower strength cider by 2% in this year’s Budget. After officially opening its Cider House tea room, Osborne was taken on a tour of the orchards and production line. Sheppy’s, founded nearly 200 years ago, produces 2.5 million litres of cider a year.

Eugene Bari of P1 and Camilla Bladon, head of sales and marketing at Jenkyn Place, pop a bottle.

English Sparkling Wine Producer, Jenkyn Place, has been named the official sparkling wine of the Powerboat P1 2015 UK championships. The five-venue race series will deliver a double bill of powerboat racing and jet ski action around the UK coast from May to September. Winning racers and riders will celebrate on the podium with bottles of Jenkyn Place Brut Cuvée 2010.

Glasgow has joined the likes of New York, Tokyo, Stockholm and Moscow with the launch of Baltic Ice Bar Glasgow – Scotland’s first ice bar. Constructed entirely of solid and sculpted ice, the 20 person capacity bar at Snow Factor in Braehead is sponsored by Coors Light. Patrons will be able to book 45 minute slots to experience the interior of Baltic where the temperature is minus 5 degrees Celsius and the walls, bar top and even the glasses are made of ice.

A giant billboard with a built in beer pump had people queuing up for a free pint of beer as part of a marketing stunt orchestrated by Carlsberg. Proclaiming it to be “probably the best poster in the world”, the interactive billboard was installed near the Old Truman Brewery in east London.

Champagne Bollinger is to debut a red “Bollinger Bicycle” at the 161st Oxford vs Cambridge boat race in London this Saturday offering Bolly by the glass and bottle. Painted in the house’s signature shade of crimson, the bike will be positioned outside the Vesta Rowing Club on Putney Embankment from 2-8pm on Saturday.

Boasting a fridge at the front emblazoned with Madame Bollinger’s famous “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad” quote, glasses of Bollinger Special Cuvée will be priced at £10.

db was treated to a trip to the “world’s best bar”, the Artesian at The Langham by Shannon Green of LDR Creative to sample the delights from cocktail kings Alex Cratena and Simone Caporale from their “unfolding and exploring” menu.

We kicked off the cocktail tour with The Magician, made with Czech herbal bitters Becherovka, cherry, smoke and jasmine. Living up to its name, the waitress set fire to the drink before we sipped it through the funnel at the top of the glass, leading it to change flavours half way through.

We couldn’t leave without trying signature sip Camouflage, served in a golden pineapple in a nod to the fact that the exotic fruit was seen as the height of luxury in Victorian times. Blending Tanqueray No. 10 with Americano, Kombucha, carrot and sandalwood, the final touch was a smoking incense stick.

Next up was a curious concoction called Will of the Woods blending savoury and sour elements. Served in a wooden cup, the cocktail contained Glenlivet whisky, larch, citrus, honey and tiny edible enoki mushrooms in a delightful collision of exquisitely balanced flavours.

And finally… we were sent off into the night with a smile by affable bartender Rudy with a Banana Daiquiri to go, accessorised with a turquoise cocktail umbrella and a pair of pink chocolate lips.
