Riesling the best match for sausage rolls
Riesling is the best wine match for sausage rolls, while Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect pairing for pepperoni pizza according to a new aroma wheel.
The wheel is the brainchild of Jacob’s Creek, which has come up with what it believes to be the best wine matches for 10 popular snacks in the UK.
It advises Fiano as a pairing for Scotch eggs due to the buttery pastry balancing out the citrus flavours in the wine, and Merlot as a match for chocolate.
Sauvignon Blanc meanwhile, is the suggested pairing for salted popcorn, while Shriaz is said to marry well with Margherita pizza due to its spicy character.
“There are plenty of guidelines out there about the best wines to drink with meals but there isn’t really any inspiration for which wines to enjoy with snacks,” said TV cook and author, Jo Pratt, who helped devise the wheel.
Pratt and a team from the Australian wine estate tasted 11 different wines alongside each of the 10 snacks, resulting in 110 possible pairings.
Jacob’s Creek compiled the wheel after a survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 57% are regularly replacing weekday evening meals with snacks, while 71% felt that there was unnecessary snobbery surrounding wine selection.
