Junk food masterpieces parody Michelin plates
One maverick chef has taken to Instagram to prove that Michelin-starred presentation need not be confined to fine dining establishments, creating a series of perfectly presented plates using less-than-gourmet foods.
From a distance, this plate might look like a well-presented plate of haute cuisine. But look a little closer and you will see that it is actually a careful arrangement of Pogos corn dogs with marble cheese slices, honey ham rosettes, Spongebob Squarepants Zoodles and “mustard tears”.
With compositions that would give most Masterchef contestants a run for their money, Chef Jacques Lamerde has built a steady following on Instagram transforming junk food staples into works of art and posting the results, accompanied with suitably tongue-in-cheek captions. Describing one creation of celery, craisins and squeezy cheese, he writes: “I call this dish ‘bugs on a stick’ because the Craisins R the ‘bugs’ and the cheeze whiz/celery is the stick.” Another masterpiece features a sprinkling of Doritos soil, while in another arrangement a Kinder Egg is “romanced” by “charred rice crispies”.
While clearly taking a shot at the over-stylised plates of some fine dining establishments, there’s no denying Chef Lamerde’s skill with a camera, and his ability to transform low-brow foods into something to behold.
