French giant moves into Côte D’Or
Les Grands Chais de France has made its first step into northern Burgundy with the acquisition of Beaune négociant Tresch Clerget.
Described as lying in a “strategic region” for the French group, Tresch Clerget owns the François Martenot and Raoul Clerget brands, and generated a total turnover of €59 million in 2013.
Announcing the news, GCF UK director Tim North commented: “We are really pleased with the acquisition of Tresch Clerget which will extend our presence to the classic, more northern parts of the Burgundy region.”
North noted that the acquisition “dovetails neatly” with GCF’s previous investment in the Mâconnais to the south of the region, “where Sylvie Ravier, our winemaker at subsidiary Pasquier Desvignes, already implemented a significant vinification programme in 2014.”
Based in Alsace, GCF’s winemaking operations cover most of the key regions of France, with a brand portfolio that includes JP Chenet and a 2012 turnover of €841m. Last year saw the group take its first step into the Costières de Nimes through the acquisition of Château de la Tuilerie.
