As English wine week approaches, the supermarket revealed that sales of its English wine had increased by 177% this week.
Rebecca Hull MW, Waitrose’s English wine buyer, said the sustained growth was thanks to the “dedication and effort” of the country’s winemakers who have gradually built the reputation of English wines from the ground up.
“There is a real momentum among the English wine industry right now, as new plantings come on stream and English winemakers perfect their art, so it’s an exciting time to be involved in English wine and we’re truly excited about the future”, said Hull.
The supermarket, which produces its own wines from its farm in Hampshire, said it would be launching a number of new English wines over the coming months. Waitrose claims to stock the widest range of English and Welsh wines of any UK supermarket, with its range numbering more than 100.
English Wine Week is a national initiative organised by English Wine Producers which will run from 23 to 31 May.
As part of the initiative, vineyards across the UK will be opening their doors to welcome visitors, offering tours, tastings and special offers.
