Zachys’ latest New York sale raises US$7.5m

The New York auction house claims to have hosted the city’s largest fine wine sale in nearly a decade last week.

Zachys’ two day auction on 26 to 27 February realised US$7,544.591, including the buyer’s premium, slightly below the pre-sale high estimate of just over US$8 million.

Held at the three-Michelin-starred restaurant Le Bernadin Privé, the event coincided with sommelier Daniel Johnnes’ week-long Burgundy celebration – La Paulée de New York.

“Zachys’ La Paulée sale was an astounding success, with competitive bidding on ultra-rare lots of Burgundy and Krug Champagne,” declared Jamie Pollack, Zachys’ MD.

“The energy and excitement among our buyers and consignors alike was unparalleled. After a number of years of Hong Kong leading the charge in the fine wine auction world it seems like there is a renaissance in the NY wine auction scene and Zachys is excited to be leading the charge.”

Early highlights included a rare vertical of Krug Clos du Mesnil 1979 – 2003 which sold for US$81,550, a magnum of Château Pétrus 1961 at US$26,950 and a bottle of Hermitage La Chapelle Jaboulet 1961 at US$13,475.

The second session was entirely given over to Burgundy and included 165 lots of Domaine de la Romanée Conti  that accounted for nine out of the top 10 hammer prices led by a 12 bottle assortment of DRC 1990 which realised US$67,375, and a Methuselah of Richebourg DRC 1971 at US$46,550.

Yet prize for the best performance went to a Jeroboam of Clos de la Roche Dujac 1998 which sold for US$5,145 smashing its pre-sale high estimate of US$1,800.
