Wine Etc pushes ‘lesser-known’ Burgundy
One of Hong Kong’s leading wine retailers is drawing attention to the “lesser-known” villages in its Burgundy portfolio.
With Burgundy becoming increasingly popular, yet also with recent small vintages putting pressure on supplies, merchants in Hong Kong, like their UK counterparts, are having to look beyond communes such as Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin to satisfy demand.
As a result, Wine Etc has announced it is going to challenge Hong Kongers to “broaden their wine selections” by pushing wines from Rully, Savigny-les-Beaune, Mercurey and Mâcon.
At its three stores across Hong Kong island, Wine Etc will be offering Leflaive’s 2012 Rully 1er cru, Bruno Clair’s 2005 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er cru La Dominode, Domaine Faiveley’s 2012 Mercurey Rouge and Christophe Cordier’s Mâcon Milly Lamartine Clos du Four 2012.
Earlier this year, Paulo Pong, managing director of Wine Etc’s parent company, Altaya, had said he would be launching a “push on Burgundy” in 2015 and that he expected the interest in the French region to continue.
Burgundy’s producers themselves have already remarked to the drinks business that they have been impressed with the growing knowledge of Hong Kong’s consumers and their desire to try new AOC.
