London restaurant Opso goes all-Greek

London Greek restaurant Opso could be set to become the city’s only eatery offering solely Greek wine when it unveils its new list in April.

Due to be unveiled on April 1, the red and white wines on offer at Opso will be solely sourced from Greece, being split into geographical regions that encompass both the mainland and the Greek islands.

Included among the whites will be 2012 Viognier Gerovasiliou; 2012 Deka Oinogenesis and a barrel-fermented 2011 Assyrtiko Argyros from Santorini.

Also featured will be what is dubbed by the restaurant as “one of the very best examples” of retsina – a type of wine that has been produced in Greece for over 2,000 years – Retsina Tetramythos

The list of reds will feature 2011 Karydas Naoussa and 2008 Kormilitsa Tsantalis Gold, in numbered bottles. The latter has historically been the official wine of the Kremlin, and the 2008 vintage is “a very rare” one, according to Opso.

Also represented will be different varieties and styles of rosés and dessert wines from Samos, Evia, Crete and Santorini, including 1998 Vinsanto Argyros.

To mark the new wine list, the restaurant will be hosting a three course wine pairing Easter menu on Wednesday 1st April from 6.30pm until 8pm. There are limited spaces available for 30 guests, with a pre-fixed price of £65 per person, for the food and wine presented.

The evening will be hosted by sommelier and Greek wine specialist Terry Kandylis, who will introduce the wines and explain how they complement each course.

Also present will be wine distributor Lance Foyster MW, owner of La Tour Melas Kyros Melas, and Alkmini Karakosta from Montofoli Estate on the island of Evia.
