London: top restaurant openings
Bonhams, Mayfair
Mayfair auction house Bonhams has opened a wine-focused restaurant offering fine wines by the glass. Headed up by Tom Kemble, seasonally focused, modern European dishes at Bonhams Restaurant draw on Kemble’s experience of working at Faviken in Sweden. On the menu are the likes of Jerusalem artichoke velouté with black truffle and quail’s egg; and haunch of sika deer with chestnut and juniper purée. On the ground floor is a wine bar serving fine and rare wines by the glass via Enomatic, such as DRC Richebourg 1995, Cheval Blanc 1982 and Screaming Eagle 2011.
The Ivy Chelsea Garden, Chelsea
Hot on the heels of the opening of The Ivy’s little sister, Market Grill in Covent Garden, comes a third sibling – The Ivy Chelsea Garden on the Kings Road. Owned by Richard Caring’s Caprice Holdings, the site features a bar, café, orangery and terrace garden prettified with wisteria, climbing roses, fountains and antique mirrors. On the modern British menu are yellow fin tuna carpaccio with spiced avocado, lime zest, crème fraîche and coriander; and lobster rigatoni bake with Amalfi lemon and zucchini. Marmite and crumpets can be taken at 11am, with afternoon tea served at 3pm and brunch at weekends.
Shackfuyu, Soho
Ramen restaurant Bone Daddies has opened a yearlong pop-up in Soho. Shackfuyu serves playful Japanese cuisine such as mac ‘n’ cheese with “cock” scratchings; and scallops in chilli miso butter washed down with Nigata Pale Ale and cocktails like the Saké Cherry Gimlet.
Foxlow, Stoke Newington
Meanwhile, Hawksmoor founders Huw Gott and Will Beckett have opened a second Foxlow site, this time in Stoke Newington. Set over two floors, among the delights on offer will be crispy five-pepper squid; fried chicken and eggs; and ten-hour beef shortrib with kimchi.
