Yquem toast of Zachy’s New York sale

Among the stars of Zachy’s early Spring auction in New York was a rare magnum of Château d’Yquem which sold for twice its pre-sale high estimate.

Californian cult wines also performed well, and Zachy’s reported that: “Similar to recent auctions, the demand for Sine Qua Non continues to rise with clients consistently bidding well above high estimates for these wines.” Among the highlights was a magnum of Sine Qua Non, Just For the Love of it, Syrah 2002 which sold for US$3,430.

There was also keen interest in top end Burgundy and Château d’Yquem. The former included a jeroboam of La Tâche, Domaine de la Romanée Conti 1971 which went for US$36,750 and nine bottles of Chambertin Armand Rousseau 2010. But best performer of all was a rare magnum of Château d’Yquem 1921which sold for US$20,821, compared to a pre-sale estimate of US$7,000 -10,000.

With North American buyers accounting for 80% of the auction, Zachy’s president, Jeff Zacharia, said: “Without a doubt the fine wine market is picking up, especially here in the United States where we saw strong support from old and new buyers both in the room and on the internet.”
