Aldi to sell ‘wagyu’ beef burgers

Discount supermarket Aldi has upped the stakes in the fine foods department announcing plans to sell Japan’s famed delicacy wagyu beef in the form of burgers, albeit from New Zealand.

Wagyu beef comes from a Japanese breed of cow known for its high levels of fat marbling, affording its meat a melt-in-the-mouth quality prized by beef connoisseurs.

Due to be sold in UK stores at just £2.99 a pack, this two-pack of wagyu burgers is vastly below the average price paid for waygu beef imported from Japan, as it is produced in New Zealand.

With wagyu beef imported from Japan costing up to £500 a kilo, many farmers in countries including Australia and the UK have set up wagyu farms over the past decade allowing people the chance to sample a version of the delicacy for a fraction of the price.

The burgers will be on sale at the supermarket for a limited time from March 5.
