Ferreira’s 1815 Port to be auctioned

Port producer Ferreira’s “Waterloo Vintage” will be tasted and auctioned in London during the bicentennial commemorations of this famous battle, with proceeds going to charity.

Symbolic of the battle in which the Duke of Wellington gained an allied victory which marked the end of Napoleon’s Hundred Days War, the auction of the Ferreira 1815 Waterloo Vintage will take place this spring.

The Ferreira 1815 Vintage is the oldest wine in the cellars of the Port house, with an “exclusive group” of collectors having the opportunity to bid on and taste the wine.

Dona Antonia Ferreira, the founder of the Port house whose motto was “every person, no matter their place in society, should do all that is good for humanity”, left a cellar filled with Vintage Ports. Ferreira was established in the Douro region prior to the 1756 demarcation.

“This is the first time in the history of Ferreira that we have decided to organize an auction of this very special 1815 Vintage Port. In keeping with the legacy of Dona Antonia, we will donate the proceeds to charity”, commented Fernando Guedes, CEO of Sogrape.

“Connoisseurs already appreciate Vintage Port, making this category of value to international fine wine auctions. The Ferreira 1815 promises to further raise this profile and contribute greatly to the reputation of Port wine – through the quality, antiquity, passion and savoir-faire contained in this historical bottle,” he said.

My family represented Ferreira from the 1890s until 1969. I believe this wine is not a “vintage” in a true sense. It is more a colheita being bottled very late as a tawny and has almost certainly been refreshed once if not twice. I have drunk similar wines from the 1830’s annd 1860’s. The Nicolau d’Almeida family in Oporto will know more. I am not trying to pour cold water on a very good story but I do think accuracy about things like this is important! So still fantastic.

I found a 1815 A Antonia Ferreira with an older label on the www.antiquewinesandspirits.com website … Is this the same wine that was auctioned in London, just with an older label design??
