Wine Australia sees Indian promise
Australia’s largest ever trade mission to India, Australia Business Week in India, has identified a number of opportunities for wine in the sub-continent.
The mission allowed representatives from the Australian wine industry to meet with Indian trade and media and through tastings and other events to discuss opportunities for Australia in India.
Australia exported nearly one million litres of wine to India worth AU$3.7 million in 2014 which, while small in the grander scheme of things, was still an increase of 27% by volume and 24% by value year-on-year.
India ranks 13th in value growth and 16th in volume growth out of Australia’s 121 export markets.
For Stuart Barclay, Wine Australia’s general manager of market development, sees this as evidence of the great potential in India.
He said: “All week, I saw people really enjoying the wines they tasted and wanting to learn more about Australian wine. Our wines are exciting for a market like India where consumers are just starting to explore wine and discover what they like, because there really is no such thing as a typical Aussie wine. We have 65 wine regions and each of those regions has its own expression and is becoming known for its champion varieties.
“While the market may be small today and not the easiest to export to (the current tariffs are among the highest in the world at 150%) the growth we’re seeing in our exports to India is an indicator of how quickly the market is developing and as a result of ABWI, Wine Australia will be exploring new opportunities to show local consumers the depth and breadth of Australian wine.”
