As reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Mayor Joseph Estrada has signed an order restricting the sale of “intoxicating beverages” during the Pope’s visit from Jan 15 to 19.

Throughout the visit “no person shall sell, offer, serve, buy or take beer, wine or intoxicating liquors on any street, sidewalk, plaza or any other place within 200 meters” of the Apostolic Nunciature, and wherever the papal motorcade is due to pass through. The Apostolic Nunciature is where the Pope will be staying during his visit.

The temporary measures are expected to affect a number of restaurants and bars in the area.

Estrada has also set a 1km liquor-free zone around Manila Cathedral on 16 January where Pope Francis will hold a Mass, and around the University of Santo Tomas on 18 January where the Pope is expected to meet with religious leaders and the youth.

Last year the Queen met Pope Francis for the first time gifting him with a hamper of the Royal estates’ finest produce including some best bitter from Windsor Castle, cider from Sandringham and whisky from the Balmoral estate in Scotland.
