Barry Burton prize winner announced
Charles Cheng has been named as the first winner of the Barry Burton Memorial Prize by the Wine and Spirits Education Trust Hong Kong and the Level 3 saké course is now open to Hong Kong students.
The prize is offered to the highest achieving students of the WSET’s Level 3 course in Hong Kong and Macau.
Cheng won an engraved decanter, a HK$10,000 bursary to put towards a study trip to a wine region or for further wine education and a magnum from the cellar of the famed Barry Burton, a former secretary of the Hong Kong Wine Society.
Cheng will also be invited to the society’s annual dinner where he will be expected to give a short speech.
Meanwhile, the Asia Wine Service & Education Centre (ASWEC) – an approved provider of the WSET’s courses in Hong Kong – has announced that it is to be the first WSET affiliate outside of the UK to offer the Level 3 Saké course.
The eight-lesson course will cover the production methods and styles of families as well as the influence on quality and price. The course combines classroom and online study and also includes tasting over 50 sakés during its run.
No prior learning in the subject is required though students will be required to complete a monitored online study programme two weeks before the course proper begins.
