Notorious actor Gerard Depardieu has shocked an audience at a World War One memorial by reportedly being “scandalously drunk” on stage.

Appearing at a commemoration event in Brussels on Sunday, Mail Online reports that Depardieu – instead of giving the expected speech – began waving his hands in the air, joking and laughing.

The actor, who recently claimed that he drank up to 14 bottles of wine a day, was due to recite poetry by the French poet-singer known as Barbara as well as work by his late son Guillaume.

“Gerard Depardieu was visibly drunk to say the least,” one spectator told Brussel’s La Capitale. “He started off by finding it difficult to find welcoming words.

“Then, he read the same sentence once, twice, and then three times.

Then he left the text that he was reading to digress on to the subject of politics in Belgium. Then, a little later, he asked what page he was on.”

In the video (below) he can be heard talking about European politics, “idiot parties” and swear words.

Finally, the show had to be stopped after half-an-hour, with some audience members left furious.

One person described Depardieu’s performance on twitter as “lamentable”, and “drunk, very bad and left in the middle of the show”.
