Chianti Classico debuts ‘Gran Selezione’

A tasting showcasing ‘Gran Selezione’ wines, Chianti Classico’s recently introduced top tier classification, is set to take place next week.

The event will showcase wines of 37 Gran Selezione Chianti Classico producers on Tuesday, 25 November, at Sixty One Whitehall in central London.

The newly introduced top-tier categorisation is positioned at the top of the region’s DOCG in terms of quality, ahead of Chianti Classico Riserva and the Chianti Classico Annata.

It is the first time that Italian wine legislation has permitted the introduction of a new category at the top of such a denomination, with the ‘Gran Selezione’ accounting for approximately 10% of the Chianti Classico production.

Sergio Zingarelli, the President of the Chianti Classico Consortium, said: “Coming to the UK again is a great thrill and this time we are here for the first European debut of the Gran Selezione. The London market has been known for many decades as one of the most important for Chianti Classico and thus we take pride in introducing to you our finest wines, the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, placed at the top of our denomination after a reorganisation of our quality pyramid.

“2014 has been a year rich in success both in Italy and abroad: this debut in the UK is the crowning achievement of our Gran Selezione World Tour which brings our premium wines to the attention of the main markets in the wine business”.

A presentation of the new category by the Consorzio and a series of masterclass tastings hosted by sommelier and wine writer Emily O’Hare will also take place; “What makes Gran Selezione different from Chianti Classico” and “Sangiovese and its partners”.

The world premiere tasting of the new top-tier ‘Gran Selezione’ category was hosted in Florence in February of this year, with the first trade tasting taking place in May at the Masters of Wine Symposium in France, and is now coming to London.

The tasting will take place at Sixty One Whitehall, London, SW1A 2ET, on 25 November from 11am to 6.30pm.
