Zachys toasts inaugural spirits auction

Zachys auction house is toasting “extraordinary” results from its latest Hong Kong auction, which featured its first line-up of rare spirits as well as fine wines.

With rare Scotch and Japanese whiskies dating back to the 1950s, alongside the more usual array of fine Bordeaux and Burgundy, Zachys was pleased with the attention given to the spirits.

Zachys Asia’s senior managing director, David Wainwright, commented: “With over 350 bidders fighting it out, it was another very, very solid auction. While DRC, Henri Jayer and other top Burgundies continue to sell strongly, it was Bordeaux that for the first time this year, had plenty of interest.

“Our first ever listing of whisky was another big success and it was early Macallan that dominated proceedings with some near record prices. All in all people continue to focus on quality and with Zachys Asia’s attention to exceptional provenance, we continue to achieve extremely robust results.”

Top results for whisky included a bottle of Macallan 1955 which went for HK$53,900, a bottle of the 1962 for $41,650, a bottle of Karuizawa 1981 for $20,825 and another bottle of Karuizawa 1982 for $19,600 (all above their high estimates).

Leading wine lots included six magnums of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, a case of 1985 Pétrus, six magnums of 2002 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Joseph Drouhin and 12 bottles of 2011 Meursault Perrieres Coche-Dury.
