As reported by the Wine Spectator, Krankl sustained serious head injuries in the crash, which happened in Ojai near Santa Barbara on 14 September.
According to the Ventura County sheriff’s department, the crash occurred after Krankl lost control of his bike on a sharp curve. No one else was involved in the accident after which Krankl was airlifted to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.
“Manfred and I are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and well wishes from our friends and loyal patrons across the globe,” his wife Elaine said in a statement, describing Krankl’s condition as “stable and improving”.
In his absence at the winery, his team, who are in the middle of harvest, will take over winemaking duties, Elaine confirmed.
Krankl is one of Californian wine’s most colourful characters. Both a self-trained winemaker and artist; Krankl produces an array of wines made predominantly from Rhône varieties, designing a bespoke label for each new release.
His quirky approach has led to a cult following, while his wines have become collector’s items and sell for vast sums at auction. In addition to Sine Qua Non, the Krankl’s also own Next of Kyn winery in Ojai.
