Dutch designer creates latest DP label
LVMH-owned Champagne house Dom Pérignon has collaborated with Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen on a bespoke label for the 2004 vintage.
Entitled: Dom Pérignon Metamorphosis by Iris van Herpen, the striking bottle and gift box design was launched in New York last night to coincide with New York Fashion Week.
In addition to putting her hand to the limited edition DP label, van Herpen has also created a made-to-order work of art as part of the collaboration, called “Cocoonase”.
Playing on the idea of rebirth and evolution, the “Metamorphosis” label links back to DP’s cellar master, Richard Geoffroy’s belief that his Champagnes have different life stages, or “plenitudes” as he calls them.
The green used on both the label and the gift box is supposed to represent the “organic power” within the wine as it evolves into its second plenitude.
“The name Cocoonase references the butterfly, which softens her cocoon shell before she goes into her next stage of metamorphosis,” said van Herpen.
“This piece houses DP 2004 nestled inside the cocoon, and its fine ribs and lines represent a one-way passage out. Cocoonase acts as a shield that protects the Dom Pérignon bottle as it prepares for its metamorphosis,” she added.
Effervescent in his praise, Geoffroy describes the 2004 vintage as being “radiant”, “open” and “elegant”, offering aromas of almond, powdered cocoa and white fruit with hints of dried flowers and toasted notes on the finish.
“It glides between density and buoyancy in a seamless crescendo leading into the chiseled complexity of a singular universe,” he said.
“Tracing an astoundingly fine line between density and weightlessness, its precision is extreme, tactile, dark and chiseled,” he added.
In 2012, Dom Pérignon collaborated with film director David Lynch on a bespoke label design for its 2003 vintage.
