Authorities caught up to the man, identified only as My Huang, after some of his customers reported unusual side effects after drinking the spirits which had been marketed as a “nutritional healthy liquor”, according to reports by the China News Agency.
Mr Huang was reported to have purchased 1kg of Sildenafil, also known as Viagra, on the internet in January before adding it to his alcohol beverages, without including it on the label. The entrepreneur said he had hoped the mystery ingredient would help boost sales, but admitted he knew it was against the law.
The spirits were sold for around 60 yuan (£5.80) per bottle, 30 of which Huang is thought to have kept for himself.
The illegal practice was shut down and Mr Heung arrested.
