WW1 centenary beer seeks funds

A London craft beer brewery is looking for donations to help produce their one-off First World War centenary brew.

The limited edition beer, called “The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke”, is to be brewed by Crafted and Distilled Brewery just the once on the 28th July — 100 years to the day from the start of the First World War.

The ale’s interesting title derives from a painting of the same name by Richard Dadd. The painting, which currently hangs in the Tate Gallery, was received as a gift from the war poet Siegfried Sassoon in memory of a friend and two brothers who lost their lives in the Great War.

And the brewer, Peter Haydon, has a personal connection to the painting, as it was in fact his great grandfather that commissioned it when he met the unwell artist while he was working at Bethlem Hospital.

In deference to the woodland scene in the painting, the beer contains chestnuts, which provides the nutty characteristics to the 5.5% abv beer.
