McIlroy opts for Jäger to celebrate win

Golfer Rory McIlroy showed the generational gap between himself and previous major winners as he celebrated his Open victory this week by drinking jägermeister from the Claret Jug.

The golf ace won his third major title on Sunday (July 20) at the British Open Championship, which took place at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England. The victory makes him only the third player in the modern era to win three majors by the time he is 25-years-old.

And, being 25, it is no surprise that he chose the party-liquor jägermeister, while in a nightclub in Liverpool with friends, family and fellow golfers, as his tipple of choice to pour from the famous Claret Jug — the trophy of the championship since 1873.

This sets him quite a way apart from the more veteran winners of the trophy, such as last year’s winner Phil Mickelson who chose instead some top wine for the Claret Jug — reportedly a $40,000 bottle of 1990 Romanee Conti.

But with the taste of victory still fresh, it’s likely that the young Northern Irishman’s pour went down just as smoothly as his predecessor.
