Bars get own internet domain
An internet domain name for the bar and club industry called .bar launched on Sunday this week at London’s Sanderson Hotel.
It’s hoped that .bar will help people find bars and clubs more easily online
The advent of .bar, which is referred to as a Top-Level Domain (TLD), means that any drinks outlet can be instantly identified as a bar by looking at their internet address, without having to incorporate the word “bar” in their descriptive name.
It also potentially allows more businesses to get a domain of their choosing that clearly identifies their trade, while helping customers and search engines find bars and clubs faster and more easily online.
“.bar will connect the bar and club industry with customers online,” said Aaron Grego, CEO of Punto 2012, the registry behind the top level domain.
“This is a perfect opportunity for businesses to grab a simple and easy-to-use domain name that describes their bar or club with a descriptive name. Our industry needs to stand out online and be found — with .bar they can,” he added.
Ben Crawford, CEO of CentralNic and domains.bar, said that the registering of .bar has been a lengthy process, and required negotiations with officials representing Montenegro’s coastal town called Bar, among others.
“After meetings with our partner Punto 2012 in bars in New York City, Mexico City, Denver, Las Vegas, Munich, Singapore and the Bar municipality in Montenegro, it is a long-awaited pleasure to launch the .bar domain name in London’s Long Bar in the company of many leading lights of the adult beverage profession as well as renowned bar flies from the domain name industry.”
