Rare spirits stash discovered in UK hotel

A bounty of rare wines and spirits has been discovered in a secret cellar at a hotel in Worcestershire.

As reported by the Birmingham Mail, the historic stash was discovered by the Evesham Hotel’s manager, David Field, when he started the job six months ago.

“This is an absolute treasure trove for a connoisseur. There are some very rare vintages here that have been stored in perfect condition for all these years,” Field told the paper.

One hundred bottles from the 3,000-strong cellar are due to be sold online via Littleton Auctions with proceeds going to the upkeep of the 500-year-old hotel.

Among the liquid treasures uncovered by Filed were two bottles of 1914 Hine Cognac with a market value of £3,000 each, a Vieil Armagnac from 1900 worth £1,000 and a bottle of 1989 Penfolds Grange estimated at £300.

“It is extremely unusual to find such an immaculate collection. I am very excited to bring them to the market.

“There is bound to be interest from all over the world, particularly because of the First World War connection,” Stuart Homer of Littleton Auctions told the Sunday Mercury.

The collection was amassed by the hotel’s 65-year-old owner, John Jenkinson. The auction is scheduled to take place at the end of June.
