Top 10 wines in UK press

NV Coates & Seely, Brut Rosé, Hampshire, UK

Matthew Jukes, writing in the Daily Mail, recommended this English sparkler in homage to English Wine Week, which runs until 1 June.

He said: “It is fitting that I recommend a first class home-grown fizz among my Italians this week for you to raise a glass to our terrific wine industry. This delicate, racy rosé is one of the finest in the land!”

Price: From £29.95 to £38.50, Hedonism Wines tel. 020 7989 0085, Corks Out tel. 01244 310 455, Dalling & Co. tel. 01923 262083, Trina’s Wines tel. 020 8876 3576, Tom I’Anson Wines tel. 01242 870 078

F’Oz Alentejo, Portugal 2012

David Williams, writing in The Observer, offered up some World Cup themed drinking this week recommending a selection of wines that “capture the spirit and flavour of Brazil” stocked by Waitrose.

Of this Portuguese red he said: “Waitrose has added a handful of Brazilian wines to its line-up this month. Hmm, I wonder why they’ve done that? Actually, the move isn’t as Sepp Blatter-cynical as it may seem: Brazil’s wine producers have come on a long way in recent years and there’s plenty of decent stuff around. However, I don’t think the Waitrose selection shows either the country or Waitrose at its best. Indeed if I were looking for something with a Portuguese accent to pep up a group stage bore-draw during the World Cup, I’d go for this suave, sumptuous red bargain from the warm south of the old country instead.”

Price: £8.49, Waitrose

Telmo Rodriguez Al-muvedre Old Bush Vine Monastrell, Alicante, Spain 2013

Williams also recommended this “captivating” Spanish Mouvédre.

He said: “As eye-catching as the Brazilian wines are, when it comes to performance in the glass the most impressive new red additions to the Waitrose range on show at the same press tasting were from World Cup holders Spain. There’s a blend of youth and experience in buyer Nick Room’s selection: mellow, mature, traditional-style old Riojas from López de Heredia or CVNE, slotting in alongside deep, vibrant, spicy, and captivatingly silky new-wave bottlings, such as highly skilled itinerant winemaker Telmo Rodriguez’s take on the monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) variety.”

Price: £8.49, Waitrose

Tesco Finest Touriga Nacional 2011 Alentejo

The Telegraph highlighted the wines of Portugal this week, exploring indigenous grape varieties such as Trincadeira, Aragonez and Roupeiro.

This wine is made from the country’s Touriga Nacional grape, of which it said: “A pretty serious red for the price, peppery and savoury, long and full-bodied on the finish. Touriga nacional is the best-known grape in port production, here unfortified.”

Price: £7.99

Esporão Reserva 2010 Alentejo

Another recommendation was this Portuguese blend of Aragones, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet.

It said: “Big, ripe blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, with minty chocolate hint and refined but grippy tannins on the finish – all the better for taking on beef or venison.”

Price: £18.46, Christopher Piper Wines

Anthemis Muscat of Samos 2005, Greece

Jamie Goode also stuck to a World Cup theme picking his “winning wines for the World Cup summer season” writing in The Daily Express this week.

Of this Greek Muscat he said: “This is a tasty sweet wine from Samos, made from the muscat grape variety – an island speciality. It’s pale brown in colour and has flavours of table grapes, raisins, barley sugar and spices. Very smooth and rich, it’s an all-purpose dessert wine.”

Price: £9.99, Waitrose

Primarius Oregon Pinot Noir 2011, Oregon, US

Goode also picked this “elegant” Pinot Noir from Oregon.

He said: “Oregon makes some lovely Pinot Noirs but they’re usually quite pricey, so it’s great to find one at under a tenner that tastes really good.

“This is pale in colour and has sappy, herby, cherry fruit. It’s elegant and highly drinkable.”

Price: £8.99, Tesco

Marques Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, Chile

Terry Kirby, writing in The Independent, recommended this Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, one of three wines he said would pair perfectly with a barbecue.

He said: “Ripe, cedary and softly full bodied, but with underlying flavours of tar and leather and a long satisfying, chewy finish, this is a very fine, serious Chilean take on classic Bordeaux. Chargrilled organic steaks or a butterfly leg of lamb would be a terrific match.”

Price: £11.28, thedrinkshop.com; £11.95, winedirect.co.uk

Yealands Estate Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2013, New Zealand

Kirby also picked this Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Yealands Estate as the perfect partner to a summer barbecue.

He said: “English asparagus is wonderful just grilled on a barbecue. This Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, from a company recently honoured for its green credentials, is full of grassy gooseberry zestiness underpinned with tropical fruits. Also good with griddled fish.”

Price: £14.95, greatwesternwine.co.uk

M de Minuty Côtes de Provence 2013, France

Finally, Kirby offered up this rosé which he described as “subtle and refined.”

He said: “Some large prawns, or even a half lobster on the barbie, with some garlicky aoli, demands a nice iced rosé from Provence. Made with Grenache, Cinsault and the local Tibouren grapes, this is pale pink, with herbal and red-fruit flavours cut through with a thrilling acidity. Subtle and refined.”

Price: £9.95 (normally £12.75), robersonwine.com; £9.99 (each, as part of mixed six-bottle purchase; normally £14.99; until 2 June ), Majestic
