Sylvie Cazes buys first Right Bank château
Sylvie Cazes has bought Château Chauvin in Saint Emilion – her first purchase on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
Cazes, the former director of Château Pichon Lalande and co-proprietor of Domaine Jean-Michel Cazes, listed her children, Pierre, Francois and Julie Regimbeau, as joint buyers, alongside herself.
The deal, which was settled for an undisclosed sum, will see Cazes takeover the 15-hectare Château Chauvin – a grand cru classe estate located in the north-west part of Saint Emilion, that had been owned by the Ondet family since 1891.
Speaking to French newspaper Sudouest.fr, Cazes paid tribute to the chateau’s former owners.
She said: “Marie-France and Béatrice Ondet devoted themselves to this property after the death of their father and ran it for 20 years with passion and pride, taking great care of the quality of the wine.”
Philippe Moureau has been appointed by Cazes as technical director, having performed the same role at Château de Pez and Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.
Laure Canu, head of business development at Domaine Jean-Michel Cazes’ tour company, Bordeaux Saveurs, will take lead commercial development at Château Chauvin.
