Rapper sues spirits company over ‘Pit Bull’ cocktail
US rapper Pitbull is suing The New Amsterdam Spirits Company, a subsidiary of E&J Gallo Winery, for naming one of its vodka cocktails “The Pit Bull”.
The Miami-based rapper, who has had his name trademarked since 2000, has filed a lawsuit against the spirits company claiming copyright infringement over the use of his name as one of its vodka cocktails, according to TMZ.
Pitbull, whose real name is Armando Christian Pérez, officially endorsees another vodka brand, Voli, which also promotes a Pitbull vodka drink.
The Grammy-winning artist is demanding compensation for profits made off the “Pit Bull” cocktail, a mix of vodka, lime juice, grapefruit juice and lemon-lime soda, as well as removal of the name from its website and promotional materials.
Voli was recently named in a lawsuit following the death of a 23-year-old in a boating accident who had been attending a Voli promotional event.
The New Amsterdam Spirits Company is based in California and is a subsidiary of E&J Gallo Winery producing both gin and flavoured vodkas.
