IMW set for record breaking Symposium

The Institute of Masters of Wine has reported a “phenomenal” response in the run up to its largest ever symposium, which takes place in Florence next month.

Over 400 delegates from more than 30 countries have now signed up for the Institute’s 8th International Symposium, including a record 124 Masters of Wine.

Sponsored by the Istituto Grandi Marchi, the event takes place from 15-18 May at the Palazzo dei Congressi and is open to all wine professionals.

Among the high profile speakers are Paul Pontallier of Château Margaux, Anne-Claude Leflaive of Domaine Leflaive, Christian Seely of AXA Millésimes, geneticist and author Dr José Vouillamoz, writer Jancis Robinson MW and, from outside the world of wine, Daniel Alegre, Google’s president of worldwide partnerships & business solutions.

In addition to these presentations and discussions, which will focus on various aspects of the wine industry’s future development, the symposium will feature four tastings and a series of themed lunches and dinners at various venues around Tuscany.

“We’ve had a phenomenal response from everyone concerned,” said Penny Richards, executive director of the IMW. “We know this will give a broad and fascinating perspective on the world of wine as it is today, and how it will be in the future.”

Praising the “incredibly generous” support from sponsors and producers, she remarked: “Everyone involved seems to recognise that the Symposium is a unique event. It’s rare to find a wine conference at this level that is so inclusive, and fun, while engaging people in serious learning and debate.”

Meanwhile, Jean-Michel Valette MW, chairman of the IMW, highlighted “a real growth in the international momentum of the Institute.” He added: “the Symposium is one of the strongest manifestations of our mission to promote excellence, interaction and learning in the global wine trade.

“I would urge anyone who wants to see that dynamic in action to join us for four important days in Florence.”

A few tickets for the event are still available, with discounts for IMW Study Programme students. For further information, email Ben McKeown, IMW communications manager, or for more information about the event, including the full programme, click here.
