Drouhin lot sold for $930k

A collection of Drouhin direct from the estate’s cellars was completely sold at Sotheby’s New York sale last weekend.

The collection achieved double its low estimate, making US$930,694 in total, while the highest ever number of online bidders at a Sotheby’s wine sale was also recorded.

The top lot from the collection was a six-bottle case of 1978 Musigny for $19,600.

Other leading lots were: 12 bottles of 1985 Chambolle Musigny “Les Amoreuses” also for $19,600; another six bottles of the 1978 for $13,475; 12 bottles of the 1990 Bonnes Mares for $10,413 and three bottles of the 1971 Musigny for $13,475.

Sotheby’s reported “substantial activity” from Asia and Latin America, as well as the “continuing resurgence” of American collectors.

Frédéric Drouhin, president of Maison Joseph Drouhin, said: “The success of the Joseph Drouhin sales demonstrates the love for the wines of Burgundy throughout North and South America.

“We are proud to have been selected as the ambassadors of Burgundy through this unique auction and it has been an honour for our family. It gives us great pleasure to know that these library wines will be shared by both new and old friends all over the world.”

Duncan Sterling, head of Sotheby’s New York wine auctions, added: “This was the first time that wines have been offered for sale from the Drouhin Family Cellar and we were extremely honoured to be given this exciting opportunity. It was also our first major sale of wines direct from the cellars of such an important house in Burgundy.

“The sale created incredible interest that was reflected by a full saleroom competing with over 90 online bidders (our highest total ever), multiple buyers on the telephone and many absentee bidders.

“The fact that the price we achieved was double the low estimate, with 79% of lots selling above the high estimate and that we sold every lot shows, that there is incredible demand for great Burgundy, from a top class property, with perfect provenance.”

The sale made $3,215,319 in total.
