Tokyo boasts a buzzing nightlife and a wealth of wine bars offering a haven for any city-going wine lover.

Once home to Asia’s most important wine market, Japan has since been superseded by Hong Kong but still enjoys a vibrant wine scene.

Japan began regularly making  wine in the second half of the 19th century –  but grape growing is believed to have started as early as 718AD. 

It’s main winemaking region lies in the Yamanashi Prefecture which accounts for 40% of domestic production with common grapes including the white Koshu.

Jip Wine Bar

Shinjuku’s Jip Wine Bar serves homegrown wine by the glass from a rotating list of 20, alongside a selection of European-style dishes. Adjacent to the bar is a wine shop where you can browse 400 bottles.

Wine Bar Mayu

Located in a cave-like bar Mayu, ‘cocoon’  in Japanese, is set across eight separate rooms in which you can ‘cocoon’ yourself in with delicious food and wine. Casual in its style, Mayu houses 400 wines from 13 countries and an in-house sommelier.

Rigoletto Wine and Bar

This lively Tokyo wine bar boasts a selection of more than 2,000 bottles housed in a walk in cellar and provides a dramatic setting for city dining serving Mediterranean-style tapas. This bar boasts a terrace with a bar and panoramic view of Tokyo station.

Bistro-SHIN

This standing wine bar is serves around 12 wines by the glass as well as a wide selection of global wines by the bottle alongside a selection of tapas-style dishes with a Japanese focus. The 10-bar seat bar enjoys a good ‘word-of-mouth- reputation with wine prices starting at JPY450 per glass and JPY1,950 per bottle.

Bongout Noh

This smart stand-up bar in Shibuya’s Miyamasuzaka with a French-bistro style serves around 20 wines by the glass each day from a variety of regions with prices between Y2500 and Y4500 for a bottle and reasonable prices by the glass. The bar offers a variety of tapas-style dishes or you can from the full restaurant menu which changes weekly. Here you will fined an even bigger wine list of around 100 bottles, but at slightly higher prices. Bongout Noh stays open until 3am so is perfect for night owls.
