Crowd-funding is an internet phenomenon that has boomed in recent years with sites such as Kickstarter generating millions to start up all kinds of creative businesses.
An array of beer-themed projects were funded by the site in 2013 with Kickstarter users donating millions of dollars to dozens of projects.
The idea is simple – pitch your business to an online audience in the hope that people will take it into their hearts and donate funds.
In 2013 three million people pledged $480 million to Kickstarter projects funding more than 19,000 ideas.
Here we round up a few of the beer-based Kickstarter projects that attracted full funding in 2013, with projects ranging from a pocked beer-bottle chiller to a craft-beer bakery.

10. The Craft Beer Kitchen, by Cooper D. Brunk – $726 pledged
This project sought funds to publish a hardcover edition of The Craft Beer Kitchen which successfully raised its requested funds in November 2013. Cooper Brunk is a classically trained chef with a passion for craft beer and a dream to publish this book which combines the flavours of malts and hops to create a variety of everyday dishes. $1 from every book sold will be donated to a hunger relief charity.
9. Holiday Brewnuts, Brewglaze and Craft Beer Marshmallows, by Kyle Bridges – $1,151 pledged
Kickstarters helped start this business by donating more than $1,000 to the BrewGlaze cause – a range featuring craft beer flavoured almonds, marshmallows, and holiday ham glaze.
8. KegVision: Smartphone Kegerator Beer Monitor, by Dan Gotko – $10,416 pledged
An ingenious app for any publican, KegVision allows you to monitor the levels of beer remaining in your keg using you smartphone ensuring you never run out of beer again .
7. Beer Diagram Poster, by Jason Haynes – $15,720 pledged
This project pitched by a graphic designer to create a beer diagram charting the family tree of beer attracted an impressive $15,000. Jason Haynes said he set up the project as he wanted to “educate the masses about the countless varieties” of beer by organising 16 varieties of beer into more than 40 subcategories into a “family tree” graphic poster.
6. PubCakes: Craft Beer Cake Mix, by Misty Birchall – $17,316 pledged
Kickstarter made Misty Birchall’s dreams of expanding her PubCakes range of craft-beer flavoured cup cakes into a ‘make at home’ craft beer cake mix. She needed just $2,500 to cover the costs of the California State Health Permits required and to cover the cost of designing and printing. She got more than $17,000.
5. Small Batch Beer Co: Revitalising 5th Street, Winston-Salem, by Small Batch Beer Co. – $35,819 pledged
The Small Batch Beer Co. pitched their business on Kickstarter with the simple aim of creating a place in downtown Winston-Salem in North Caroline where people could gather to enjoy handcrafted beers and hand-crafted cocktails. They needed $25,000 to set up, but attracted $35,000 from beer loving Kickstarter users.
4. The Michigan Beer Film, by Kevin Romeo – $34,676 pledged
The Michigan Beer Film was launched as a project to explore the “explosive growth, both economic and artistic, of the Michigan craft beer scene”. The project attracted $34,000 from likeminded backers.
3. Spin Chill: Warm Beer Sucks, by Trevor Abbott – $40,046 pledged
A brilliant formed and handy invention was born on Kickstarter in 2013 – The Spin Chill. The pocket-sized device allows you to chill your bottled beer wherever you might be. Made by mechanical engineers from the University of Florida, the device cools a bottle of beer in just 60 seconds using an innovative chilling “drill bit”.
2. The Perfect Beer Drinking Vessel and Private Keg, by Drink Tanks – $236,772 pledged
Keep your beer cold and carbonated for 24hours with this 18/8 stainless steel, vacuum insulated keg, complete with beer tapping abilities. Beer-loving Kickstarter users loved it donating a staggering $236,000 to the cause.
1. PicoBrew Zymatic: Automatic Beer Brewing Appliance, by PicoBrew LLC – $661,026 pledged
Finally, one of the highest funded beer-themed Kickstarter project of 2013 – the Picobrew Zymatic – which attracting an astonishing $661,000. This at-home brew kit allows you to make a keg of beer as easily as a load of bread. The holy grail for the DIY craft beer brewer.
