New booze comparison site highlights UK deals on drinks

A price comparison site for the UK drinks trade has been launched which promises to identify over £5,000 worth of savings daily.

Called Bring a Bottle, the online resource is the brainchild of former advertising executive Hugo Fairey who established the site helped by a friend with a background in web development.

Explaining the motivation to fund and found Bring a Bottle, Fairey told the drinks business, “There are a lot of price comparison sites out there but we couldn’t find one within the drinks trade itself.”

While Fairey conceded there are competitors online offering a similar service for supermarket shoppers [as well as Wines Direct for just still and sparkling wines], he added that other services are not as “clear and precise” as Bring a Bottle, nor are they updated daily.

Currently, Bring a Bottle features 1,800 wines, beers and spirits, with, in each case, a listing of the lowest and highest prices from the UK’s leading drinks retailers, including the major multiples, as well as Majestic, drinksupermarket.com and thedrinkshop.com.

Historic pricing is also displayed for individual labels in graph form, allowing web users to see the pricing of certain brands over the course of the latter half of this year.

Fairey also told db that Bring a Bottle is designed to cater for two types of consumer: those who know what they want and are looking for the best price in the market, and others who are simply scouring the net for bargains.

Dominating the product listings are wine and Champagne, with a 46% share of the labels featured, while spirits hold 34% and beers and ciders 20%.

Interestingly, Fairey said that Champagne, whisky and gin are currently the most searched categories on Bring a Bottle.

Fairey also noted a handful of recent cost savings identified on the site, which can be seen below:

• 44% saving on Wolf Blass Red Label Chardonnay/Semillon
• 40% saving on Luis Felipe Edwards Reserva Merlot
• 40% saving on Jack Daniels Whiskey
• 37% saving on Jacob’s Creek Sauvignon Blanc
• 29% saving on Bollinger Special Cuvée Brut NV Champagne
