Beer stealing pig to get plaque

Swino, the short-lived Australian pig with a penchant for stealing beer and starting fights with livestock, is being considered for a plaque near his home to help improve road safety.

The porcine menace was a regular feature at the De Grey River campsite in Western Australia where he shot to notoriety for stealing campers’ beer and picking a fight with a cow.

In October he was found dead near Port Hedland having in all likelihood been hit by a truck.

However, his death has inspired the authorities to put up a roadside plaque with his image as an encouragement to motorists to pull over at rest stops to avoid fatigue.

Fiona Findley of Main Roads told AAP that the plans were still in very early stages but it could be linked in to a wider road safety initiative to encourage drivers to take rests while on long drives.

Public contributions are apparently being welcomed.
