Carlsberg invests £513m in China brewery
Work has started in Dali, China on the construction of a new Carlsberg brewery, which will aim to produce 15 million hectolitres by 2015.
The Danish brewer is investing five billion yuan (£513 million) in the project, which has come about thanks to a strategic partnership between the Carlsberg Group and the provincial government of Yunan.
The new brewery will utilise “world-class technology in order to ensure its brewing production lives up to the green commitment in energy saving”.
Stephen Maher, CEO of Carlsberg China, said: “The new greenfield brewery in Dali will set the bar high for China and around the world. It further cements our position as market leader in the Western China, supporting us to realise our ambition to be the fastest growing brewer in China.
“The partnership also demonstrates our determination and commitment to fostering closer collaboration with local market and the community.”
It is expected to be the company’s second biggest brewery, behind its 12m-hectolite Baltika site in Russia.
The new brewery aims to help build Carlsberg’s market share in South China. It will not only boost local production of Carlsberg’s own brand, but also increase the production capacity of local brands such as Dali Beer and Feng Hua Xue Yue Beer.
